The death toll for US forces continues to climb in Iraq. A series of deadly attacks pushed the number of troops killed to a new high for 2007.
It comes as Congress and President Bush try to find a way to break their political stalemate over the future of the war effort.
The war spending bill that Congress has passed will land on the president's desk Tuesday. But, President Bush has already said he will veto it because the bill contains timelines for troop withdrawals.
The war effort in Iraq led to 'another' grim milestone. April is now the deadliest month for US forces, so far this year.
Four soldiers and a marine died in Baghdad over the weekend. Three of them killed in a single roadside bombing. 104 US troops have died in Iraq since April 1st.
A government report out today says attacks like that one are playing a big role in slowing the reconstruction process in Iraq. The report's bottom line: Iraqis will not be capable of managing rebuilding projects by themselves, anytime soon."
The report goes on to say -- corruption within the Iraqi government is adding to the problem. So far, the US and its allies have spent almost $400-billion on reconstruction efforts.
This news comes as a delegation of lawmakers gets ready for a meeting Wednesday at the White House to discuss what comes next after President Bush vetoes their war spending bill -- that includes a timeline for troop withdrawal.
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, just back from cancer surgery, said President Bush remains firm in his vow to veto the measure.
Snow says, “The ball is in the Democrats' court right now. They have known for nearly 3 months, you can't put in timetables, you can't tell the president or the troops how to run the war."
Even though they don't have the votes to override mister bush's veto -- top democrats aren't giving up. They're asking the president to sign the $124-billion measure into law.
As of right now over thirty three hundred American soldiers have died in Iraq.
