The adage, "When one door closes, another opens" is taking on new meaning for some frustrated Staten Island patrons of a recently shuttered hair salon.
The closure earlier this month of DV Hair Salon Inc., doing business as Looking Glass Haircutters, in the Woodrow Shopping Center, Rossville, had left some of its customers with seemingly worthless gift certificates that were purchased at the business prior to its shutdown and a city marshal's posted Warrant of Eviction.
But now, another Staten Island business has stepped forward to help disappointed customers of the former salon who are holding unredeemed gift certificates.
The owners of Hairphoria Hair Salon in Fort Wadsworth, DawnMarie Waite and Lorraine Pignotta, are offering to honor those gift certificates, up to $100, said Rebecca Pellicano, Hairphoria's general manager.
The salon would of course need to be reimbursed for any color product used, usually $6 per bowl, Mrs. Pellicano said.
Hairphoria Hair Salon may be reached at 718-981-4330.
Mrs. Pellicano said it's easy to comprehend the likely frustration of consumers holding the nonredeemable gift certificates.
"If I were in their shoes, knowing that I spent this money and were not be able to seek satisfaction in the matter, I would feel terrible," Mrs. Pellicano said. "We knew it was the right thing to do, to offer our services, to give what we could, which is basically our time and our skills."
For at least one of the gift-certificate purchasers, Hairphoria's free offer comes as an unexpected bright light in an otherwise dismal experience.
"I think (Hairphoria's offer) ... is above and beyond," said Tottenville resident Adrienne Renda, whose purchase in December of a Looking Glass gift certificate for her mother-in-law has yet to be satisfied. "I'm surprised. It's wonderful that another business would step up and do something like this. They're very generous."
Looking Glass Haircutters apparently had been dealing with financial difficulties for months, having filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, or reorganization, in June 2007. The case was subsequently converted to Chapter 7 in late December, signaling an eventual liquidation of all assets.
Consumers holding unredeemed Looking Glass gift cards may contact the Bankruptcy Court to file a "proof of claim." Information regarding the process may be found on the Web site of the United States Bankruptcy Court, Eastern Division of New York, at www.nyeb.uscourts.gov/gen_info.html.
