One haircut grew into two acts of kindness yesterday, making yesterday morning beautiful for employees at a London hair shop.
The warm fuzzies started when Anne McKee entered the Commissioners Road salon to have her 30-centimetre ponytail cut off and made into a wig for cancer patients.
Things got warmer and fuzzier a few moments later when a stranger who had a haircut in another chair left the store after quietly paying for McKee's cut.
"How's that for pay it forward?" said First Choice hair stylist Kirsty Milner, who cut McKee's hair. "One good deed turns into another."
The stranger, a man with curly locks who had given his name as Kerry and reminded McKee of wrestler Bret (The Hitman) Hart, didn't stick around after his random act touched the hearts of those inside the salon.
"When Sophia (the man's hair stylist) came over and said 'That man paid for your haircut,' we all had goosebumps," Milner said. "The hair on my arms was standing up. I mean, how nice is that?"
The haircut cost $14.65 and the stranger also left money for a tip.
"I can't believe this," McKee said. "All the bad things that happen these days, you just can't let something like this go."
McKee planned to donate the ponytail to A Bientot Wig and Mastectomy Boutique after four years of growing her hair.
Her mission began after a close friend in Pembroke died of cancer more than four years ago. Since then, McKee's brother died of lung cancer and two of her friends have the disease. Meanwhile, McKee's teenaged daughter has grown enough hair to donate two wigs to cancer patients.
"It is such a nice thing to do," Milner said. "For us, that was a really good start to the day."
