Sanjaya is not the best singer in the history of the competition. He’s not even the best of this season’s finalists. But he’s not a disaster either. In fact, those who are looking to tear him down or use him as an example of the show’s weakness need to keep a few things in mind before ranting away.

Montgomery Pleads Guilty to Fraud Scheme http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_2/ http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_2/ Mon, 09 Apr 2007 21:01:52 -0400 admin http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_2/

"I sincerely regret the role I played in this unfortunate episode," Montgomery said in a statement following the plea. "I have disappointed many people, and for that I am truly sorry."

Montgomery's plea deal "reflects his minor role" in an alleged conspiracy and does not require him to testify at the trial of his former coach, Steven Riddick, and other co-defendants, according to his lawyers. That trial is scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Defense attorneys said Montgomery could be sentenced to 37 to 46 months in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1. The U.S. attorney's office had no immediate comment.

Montgomery, 32, was charged last year along with Riddick, and 11 others in an alleged conspiracy to deposit $5 million in stolen, altered or counterfeit checks at several banks over three years.

An alleged coconspirator, Ephraim Richardson, previously pleaded guilty to a single charge of conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

"Mr. Jackson was not aware and he is extremely upset that his memorabilia was included amongst the memorabilia that is being auctioned off," said spokeswoman Raymone K. Bain.

The Jacksons Auction is scheduled May 30-31 at the Hard Rock hotel resort.

Guernsey's auction house said items include Michael Jackson's gold record for his "Thriller" album, handwritten lyrics for The Jackson Five hit "ABC" and a "Victory Tour" program signed by Jackson family members.

Arlan Ettinger, founder and president of Guernsey's, compared the sale to an auction of Elvis Presley/Graceland memorabilia he conducted in Las Vegas in 1999.

"It certainly is in that sphere of landmark, high-profile, extraordinary auctions," Ettinger told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Michael Jackson, 48, has been living in Las Vegas while he evaluates proposals for a comeback after his 2005 acquittal in California on child molestation charges.

"Good job," said Adam's mom, Amber Delacruz, 25, of New Baltimore. "You look good."

The Delacruz family was just one of several that came to Esbi International Salon on Hall Road in Utica on April 1 to receive free haircuts. The staff provided them to active-duty military members and their families.

"This is the second time we've come," said John Delacruz, 28. "We got a letter in the mail telling us about it. I think it's great that they do this. My wife loves this place."

Family Claims Minister Killed Himself After Being http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_5/ http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_5/ Tue, 10 Apr 2007 08:49:16 -0400 admin http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_5/ Family Claims Minister Killed Himself After Being Awake for 30 Minutes of Surgery.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In the last two weeks of his life, Sherman Sizemore felt like people were trying to bury him alive.

Now, more than a year later, members of his family say the horrifying experience of being conscious during surgery but unable to move or speak led directly to the Beckley minister's suicide — perhaps the first such case in the country.

Advocates say Sizemore's death should draw attention to a little-discussed phenomenon called anesthesia awareness that could happen to between 20,000 and 40,000 people a year in America.

In some instances, patients might be conscious for only a few seconds, but cases like Sizemore's, where people remain conscious for most of their surgery, can lead to post-traumatic stress, experts say.

"It's the first time I know of anyone succeeding in taking their own lives because of this, but suicidal thoughts are not all that uncommon," said Carol Weihrer, president of the Virginia-based Anesthesia Awareness Campaign, which she founded after her own experience with anesthesia awareness.

The North Carolina Attorney General's office, which took over the case in January after the local district attorney was accused of ethics violations in his handling of it, said it would have announcement on the case at 2:30 p.m.

Prosecutors did not say what the announcement would be.

A grand jury indicted the three players on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense last spring after a woman told police she was assaulted at a March 2006 team party where she was hired to perform as a stripper. All three have maintained their innocence, with one publicly calling the allegations "fantastic lies."

L’ORÉAL USA ACQUIRES BEAUTY ALLIANCE, L.L.C. http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_10/ http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_10/ Thu, 19 Apr 2007 23:47:00 -0400 tennyuint http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_10/ FORMS NEW BUSINESS UNIT OF ITS PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS DIVISION

New York, NY (April 12, 2007) – L’Oréal USA, Inc., a subsidiary of L’Oréal S.A., the world’s largest beauty company, has acquired 100% of Beauty Alliance L.L.C., in which it had taken a 30% minority interest last July.

Beauty Alliance is one of the largest and fastest growing professional salon distributorships in the U.S. selling to 125,000 salons through 870 Distributor Sales Consultants and through 400 professional outlets. Beauty Alliance, a privately-held company headquartered in Clearwater, Florida, will operate as a separate unit within L’Oréal’s Professional Products Division.

“The acquisition of Beauty Alliance allows L’Oréal USA to further strengthen our position in a market which is strategic for us,” said Laurent Attal, President and CEO of L’Oréal USA. “We have a large and vibrant salon business in the United States. The consolidation that has taken place in parts of the U.S. distribution system makes this an appropriate time for L’Oréal to take a greater interest in the distribution process for the benefit of all stakeholders in the professional hair salon industry. This is a strategic investment in the future of salon professionals.”

“After studying the needs and buying habits of professional hairdressers for a very long time, we have determined that the best way to develop our business in the United States is to take this interest in the distribution process in certain territories,” said David Craggs, President of L’Oréal USA’s Professional Products Division. “In doing this we can meet the needs of both small and large salon owners by providing them with unsurpassed service and education through our extensive store and sales consultant networks. The economic equation associated with vertical integration will also allow us to increase our investments, and the acquisition of Beauty Alliance is one way to achieve that goal.”

Beauty Alliance will continue to be led by Jamie Cheek, its current President. “We are very enthusiastic about the growth opportunities this business combination offers both our companies,” noted Mr. Cheek. “L’Oréal and Beauty Alliance share a passion for the professional hairdresser business, and L’Oréal recognizes that we are the premier distributor in the country. To that end, Beauty Alliance will continue as a full service distributor offering a broad range of L’Oréal and other high quality brands both through the distributor sales consultants and the store network.”]]>

The stylists face two challenges per episode – the short cut challenge, testing technical hairstyling skills and the elimination challenge, testing creativity and advanced skills. Every challenge will be inventive and extraordinary, pushing them out of their comfort zone and requiring more than just talent with a comb and scissors. The stylists will also need the ability to service client needs, manage a staff and work as part of a team to make it in this competition. In the first episode, the stylists feel the heat when faced with their first short-cut challenge – one hour to show off their signature style on 12 mannequin heads. The winner of the challenge will have first choice of model and station in the upcoming elimination challenge, where the stylists are tasked with creating a work of art using professional models with long hair and a collection of arts and crafts materials.

In each episode, host Smith, delivers the news of the chosen winner and loser with input from Hershberger and Carl, as well as the guest judges. Some stylists will get "cut" early and others will "blow away" the competition.

THE JUDGES:

For more than three decades Smith has held the public's interest as an award winning actress, designer and role model. A native of Houston, Texas, Smith's career began as a top model and soon came into American homes as the Breck Girl, which led to relationships with Wella Balsam and Max Factor. Hollywood beckoned, and before long, she was appearing in popular series such as "McCloud," "The Rookies" and "Switch." In 1976, Smith starred as Kelly Garrett on "Charlie's Angels" and was the only actor to continue with the series for its five-year network run. Following "Charlie's Angels," she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her critically acclaimed portrayal of the legendary first lady in "Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy," one of the most highly rated telefilms of all time. In 1989, Smith was honored with a star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. More recently, she co-starred in the CBS drama, "The District," portraying DA, Vanessa Cavanaugh.

In 1985, Smith entered the business world with the introduction of her collection of women's apparel for Kmart stores. She pioneered the concept of celebrities developing their own brands rather than merely endorsing others. Since that time, more than 100 million women have purchased clothing or accessories bearing her name. With this strong recognition and record of success, she entered the home furnishings market in 2002. Her latest collection, Jaclyn Smith Home, features furniture, bedding, textiles, wall coverings and home accents at affordable prices. The designs are produced by Hickory Hill Furniture, King Koil, Kingsway Fabrics and Dalyn Rug Company and are available through select dealers.

Hershberger is one of the most influential and sought after hairstylists in Hollywood and New York. Known for her consistently new vision and the skill, she is a personal favorite of directors and celebrities alike. Equally in demand in the world of fashion, she has been the top choice for a number of the world's most renowned photographers celebrities and models, shooting multi-million dollar campaigns along with covers for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, W, Allure, Vanity Fair, and many more.

Hershberger continues to consult on film sets, designing and coordinating looks for award-winning directors and the world's most popular actors. She is also constantly working as a personal stylist for numerous celebrities and models, as well as prominent social and business leaders. Sally can be found in her own salon in New York at Sally Hershberger Downtown or at the Chris McMillan Salon in Los Angeles, typically with an extensive waiting list of devoted clients.

Carl is the fashion director of Allure where he oversees the fashion pages of the magazine including "Fashion Cravings," which features the "lust" and "must" items of the month; "Fashion Extras," which highlights the accessories of the moment; and "Style 101," which breaks down the latest trends to make it easy for women to incorporate them into their wardrobe. Each month, he also writes about the hottest "look now" for "Fashion Bulletin." Twice a year, Carl travels to Milan and Paris to report on the looks of the runway. He has appeared on national and local television (including the Style Network and WPIX's WB11 Morning News) and is frequently interviewed by newspapers across the country. Prior to joining Allure, Carl worked at Jane, Nylon and Interview.

Born and raised in Denmark, Fris started with his own salon 15 years ago. His work behind the scenes in TV and film quickly gave him a high-style reputation for hair cutting, coloring, makeup and grooming which has taken him around the world. On the verge of international status, Fris decided to follow the "American Dream" by moving to NYC in 1999.

Since then Fris' accolades have included: Head Stylist at Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Salon at Saks 5th Avenue, Celebrity Stylist for John Frieda Salons, Grooming Specialist on the TV series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" in Europe and author of the best selling books Man Tame Your Body and Women Treat Your Body. He has shaped the careers of hundreds of stylists, and the list of celebrities and models that have passed through his doors is endless.

"Shear Genius" is produced for Bravo by Reveille. Ben Silverman and Mark Koops are executive producers of the series. Holly Wofford is co-executive producer.]]>
$400 haircut for man of the people; John Edwards http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_13/ http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_13/ Sun, 22 Apr 2007 01:01:18 -0400 admin http://barbersandstylists.com/article/article_13/

Wait, high-priced Beverly Hills haircuts for the candidates?

John Edwards announced Thursday that he was reimbursing his campaign $800 to cover what his aides said was the cost of two haircuts -- yes, you read that correctly -- by a Beverly Hills barber, though, perhaps, the word stylist is more applicable.

A spokesman for the campaign, Eric Schultz, said that Torrenueva Hair Designs of Beverly Hills sent the bill for a haircut in February and a second last month to the Edwards campaign and that the campaign mistakenly paid it.

Schultz said Edwards would reimburse the campaign. He would not say how a haircut could cost $400 or whether it might cover other expenses, too.

The stylist, Joseph Torrenueva, said in an interview that his normal charge was $175 "in my shop" and that the extra fee was to go to where the candidate was, a practice he described as routine among his clients. Beyond that, he said, "I really can't talk about it."

Edwards has presented himself in the Democratic field as an advocate of working-class Americans, lamenting the nation's growing economic disparity.

Edwards was disparaged as "the Breck girl" by Republicans when he ran for president in 2004. More recently, he was captured on camera, waiting for an interview to begin and presumably unaware that he was being taped, fussing with his hair for nearly two minutes.

That clip found its way to YouTube, with the song "I Feel Pretty" playing in the background. Posted on Nov. 8, 2006, it was viewed 289,288 times as of Thursday evening.

When Bill Clinton was president, he once summoned a Los Angeles hair stylist to Air Force One to cut his hair while the plane sat on the tarmac in Los Angeles.

Candidates are finding more gaffes and foibles posted on the Internet. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was captured on camera in South Carolina on Wednesday when he was asked about sending "an air-mail message to Tehran."

"Remember that old Beach Boys song 'Bomb Iran'?" McCain asked and burst out with the first three notes of "Barbara Ann," with slightly different words. "Bomb, bomb, bomb," he sang.
