Barbers International
Posted On 01/12/2007 00:46:45
For all of you Barbers out there. Check out Barbersinternational.com.  Went to their first annual barber convention in Vegas.  It was a good time.  Hopefully next year a lot more people will be able to be there.  It would be great to see more of the barbering community get involved.  Check it out.

Uncle Buck's Barber Shop

Hello again.  Just trying to get the most out of this site.  I work at Uncle Buck's in Hillsboro, OH.  I am Uncle Buck.  I love the town that I work in.  It is a bit smaller than most.  You really have to get out in the community that you live in.  That is one of the best ways to market yourself in a small town.  Plus, I also sell hats, shirts, and hoodies.  I try to make the best quality stuff and then sell it for what I have invested in it.  This way, it will be something people will want to wear, thus giving me free advertising.  I have a sports oriented theme and will talk about most things, except probably politics.  If you are ever in the 'Boro look me up and stop in.

Owner Protection

When I read the blog on professionalism it got me thinking.  One solution as an owner is to see a lawyer and have a contract written up.  First, make sure you put in a non-competing clause.  Second, you can lay out the expectations on behavior of your employee in it.  Third thing is to list things that will be cause for dismissal.  It never hurts to protect yourself as an owner.  Plus, by signing the contract, an employee has a very clear sense of who you are and the expectaions they are agreeing to.  If they choose to take a different path there are penalties and they can't run off with you clientele.

Why do something you can't.

I've been barbering for 15 years. In that time I have fixed numerous short haircuts attemped by beauticians. Why do people insist on doing things in their trade that they are not competent to do. If a female comes to my shop and asks me for a service, I don't tell them, "Sure, I can do that." As a matter of fact I would tell them I might be able to do it, but a beautician would probably do it better since I don't cut women's hair much. If you cannot cut a flattop or fade, don't try to steal a persons money. Send them somewhere that can do these things. I would rather cut someone well, than try to do something I couldn't.
